Skimping on Sunscreen

Sunscreen manufacturers determine SPF in a laboratory setting. Subjects put on a certain amount of sunscreen per centimeter of skin and are then exposed to a solar simulator (a lamp that creates UV radiation similar to sunlight). The amount of sunscreen applied for this test is quite heavy, far more than most people ever use at the beach. The reality is that an SPF 15 isn’t really a 15 if you only apply a thin layer. Therefore, we urge patients to layer their sunscreen. Apply your sunscreen 30 minutes before exposing yourself to the sun. Let it dry down for at least 15 minutes and then reapply another coat just before your tennis match, mountain hike or other outdoor activity. That way, you’ll have a fighting chance of achieving the full SPF rating and maximizing the potential UVA protection of your product.

Common Questions

Derm RF | February 26, 2011 at 1:12 am | Categories: Common Questions | URL: http://wp.me/pMnJi-iV

February 25, 2011

I just moved to Colorado and have experienced a drastic change in my usually combination skin—it’s bone dry!

Here are some high altitude tips for you:

  • Slather on extra moisturizer in the morning and at night.
  • UV radiation increases 10–12% for every 3,000 feet of elevation, so even if you can’t see the sun, apply sunscreen with antioxidants to protect your skin.
  • Don’t forget to protect your lips as well. The sun can be relentless at higher altitudes, especially in states like Colorado, where the sun shines more than three hundred days a year.

My Doctor told me that I have seborrheic dermatitis and nothing he has given me has helped. Do you have a heavy moisturizer?

Like acne, seborrheic dermatitis is initiated by androgenic hormones and is a common

inflammatory disease of the skin known as dandruff in its mildest form. It appears as red, inflamed patches covered by oily or dry scales that may feel chapped or itchy. It can be found on the scalp, eyebrows, nose folds, temples and beard area. When localized on the face, we refer to it as “facial dandruff.” It can be caused by excessive oil production brought on by hormones or stress, a change in environment, and an inflammatory reaction to yeast. This is often worse in the winter because of the lack of humidity. Like many skin conditions, there is a genetic component, so if your parents suffer with it, you are more prone to experience it as well.

You will need more than a heavy moisturizer. Each product in the SOOTHE Regimen has been carefully formulated with ingredients and medicines specifically designed to address the causes and manifestations of sensitive skin, i.e., disruption of the skin's outer barrier, moisture loss, redness, dryness, burning and stinging. Within days to weeks depending on the severity of your condition, your skin will feel comfortable, smooth and soft with a visible reduction of facial redness.

Winterizing Your Skincare Routine

How are you staying warm this winter?

a.       Cranking indoor heat

b.      Wearing lots of wool

c.       Taking long, hot showers or baths

d.      All of the above

With snow on the ground in 48 of the 50 states in the U.S., most people are doing some if not all of the above to stay warm. While we’ve learned to winterize everything from our cars to our boats in preparation for cold winter weather … we often miss on the best way to winterize our skincare. In fact, all of the above habits can wreak havoc on our skin.

In winter, low temperatures, low humidity and strong, harsh winds disrupt the skin’s natural lipid barrier, causing increased water loss that leads to inflammation, further damage to the barrier and further moisture loss. It’s a downward spiral unless something is done to stop it.

This February, spend a few minutes learning how to arm your medicine cabinets with the right ingredients to help your skin look as healthy and luminous as it does in the summer months. Tune in to Derm RF for the tips and tricks to get you there this winter, special insights from Dr. Kathy Fields and a chance to win.

Here’s to staying warm and dry this month!

Sincerely,

Your Derm RF Team

Ingredient of the Week

Retinol

Incorporating retinol into your daily anti-aging skincare routine is a perfect way to turn over a new leaf for the new year. By sloughing off old, dead cells and encouraging the growth of healthy, young cells, retinol is tops for encouraging cell renewal and improving skin’s texture. Retinol also helps stop collagen breakdown for less-lined, firmer, brighter skin. Find cell-renewing retinol in Rodan + Fields® ANTI-AGE Night Renewing Serum. Take your results one step further by using the AMP MD™ Micro-Channeling Tool before ANTI-AGE Night Renewing Serum to maximize the delivery of retinol into the skin’s upper layer.

I’m a big proponent of New Year’s Resolutions. As each year ends, I take the time to evaluate and refocus for the new year. Responsibilities and daily to-dos pile up, and it’s often hard to find time for a little relaxation. So this year, at the top of my list is a resolution to take a couple minutes a day for “me time.” But I still want to maximize the use of my time, so I started AMPing Up my routine and spending that time not only letting go of the daily stresses but also changing my skin. I started using the Rodan + Fields AMP MD System with my ANTI-AGE regimen, and already I’m seeing results. My skin feels smoother and tighter, and it has only been two weeks. With results like these, I know that my “me time” really is the best spent minute in anti-aging. For me it’s important to take a little time each day to sit back, relax and roll with my AMP MD for a younger and more vibrant me.

Amp It Up

I don’t make New Year’s Resolutions. If I did, the list of all the things I want to accomplish or change about myself would be too long and feel overwhelming.  Instead, I  come up with a catchphrase  that serves the purpose of shaping my attitude toward events for the upcoming year. It reflects the world around me, helps put my daily life into perspective, and motivates me to think differently. For example, “I’m stoked” (a common Southern California surfer’s idiom) seemed fitting for the riding high prosperity and sense of abundance in 2007. It reminded me to appreciate all of my blessings and recognize that life is full of dynamic cycles. Neither good times nor bad ones (fortunately) last forever, something we all tend to forget. It also set me on a path to give back. So, when, 2008 arrived and the economy crashed,  the theme “It’s good for you” helped me to recognize the lifelong lessons I  would learn from facing that year’s challenges and disappointments.

This year, I’m thinking “Amp it up” is apropos. Aside from the homage to our Rodan + Fields product launch, I am excited to amp up my life in all realms. Because I am already pretty busy, I am not looking to do more. Instead, my intent is to turn up the dial on daily activities that can enhance my life. Here are a couple of examples:

Starting a conversation with a complete stranger, an attribute that once came naturally to me, has somewhat diminished with age.  As I tell my kids, by being outgoing, friendly, and open,  you never know who you’ll meet or what you will learn. Chit-chatting with a couple at an adjoining table in a restaurant or getting to know a little bit about the hotel concierge or my taxi driver while traveling the country, sometimes requires me to step outside my comfort zone. My dad has always been gifted in this area. At 87, he can still work a room like nobody’s business. So imagining him in a particular situation and asking myself, “what would my dad Harry do if he were here” helps get me going.  “Channeling” a person in my life who embodies a desired quality both inspires and motivates me.

Amping up my efforts to attack my ever growing “to-do” list on a daily basis will give me a huge sense of accomplishment. I have learned, procrastination leads to guilt and guilt takes away the satisfaction of eventually getting the job done.  Amnon is the master task-master. By the day’s end, his desk is always clean and his inbox always empty. The little bit of focused extra effort he gives toward completing a job makes all the difference. So this year I will strive to be a little more “Amnonian” in my approach to work.

So while sitting in the airport on January 2nd, I am taking the first step toward an amped up 2011. I just met Brenda, a writer of alternative medicine books and I am completing Elana’s assignment to write a blog entry for DermRF.  It’s working!

Wishing you all a year of excellent health and great achievements!

Katie Rodan

Don’t Stress … Tips for a Beautiful Holiday Season

Black Friday has come and gone and the holiday season is in full swing ... and so is seasonal stress.   Greeting cards, wish lists, holiday menus, party details, traffic. parking spaces, sold-out electronics, lines at the toy store, lines at the post office, lines everywhere, air travel  … phew … even compiling this list is causing a surge in cortisol levels. While it might be “the most wonderful time of the year,” holiday season is often accompanied by a super-sized serving of stress.

Mounting stress needs an outlet or the first place it may show is on your face. Your body responds to stress with an increase in the stress hormone, cortisol.  Cortisol is part of the natural fight or flight response that enables self-preservation.  But when you’re all stressed out with no place to go (like waiting in line at Target), cortisol can wreak havoc with virtually every organ in your body and that shows on your most visible organ, your skin.  The signs are obvious: breakouts, an ashen or sallow complexion, the flushing of rosacea, dark under-eye circles, dull and limp hair, and more pronounced lines and wrinkles. And what’s more, the effects of stress on skin are cumulative so even small stressful events can show on your face.

While stress is a part of everyday life, there are ways to manage it and control how it affects your skin, so you can look great at the party even if you stressed over planning it or getting there.  This month on Derm RF, we’ll give you tips to manage stress from the inside out so you can look your best this holiday season and well into the new year.

Happy Holidays,

Your Derm RF Team

With the holidays approaching, I don’t want to take any chances on having my complexion flare up.  A rosy, holiday glow is one thing but redness I can do without.  That’s why I love ENHANCEMENTS Mineral Peptides.  As you can see here from my before and after photos, this amazing product really helps to diminish any signs of redness.  With ENHANCEMENTS, I know I can hit the holiday parties looking terrific!

A Chance to Win…

Our recent market survey told us that 20 year olds, who once enjoyed this time in their life feeling invincible to the aging effects of time, were now hugely concerned with fighting Father Time. With each passing decade, as 50 becomes the new 30 and 40 the new 25, people are starting their anti-aging treatments younger and younger. Let’s put this new trend to the test. Comment on this post in the next 24 hours with the age at which you started using anti-aging treatments and be entered in a drawing to win the new Rodan + Fields AMP MD™ Maximum Delivery System, the ultimate tool to AMP up your skincare.

Confessions of a Dermatologist

By Dr. Katie Rodan

I am afraid of plastic surgery.  Sure, I’ve been through med school, performed countless surgeries, and I  face blood on a regular basis. I even share my medical practice with an excellent plastic surgeon, well known for his “natural results.” But nevertheless, I’m afraid to undergo “the knife.”  Mainly it’s because for every good outcome attributable to any one of the number of excellent Bay Area plastic surgeons, there are a handful of less-than-perfect results. I’ve also seen friends and patients who have dared to undergo surgical, cosmetic procedures only to look a little bit like someone else. But here’s my dilemma—as a 55-year-old dermatologist, with everyone looking at my skin, I’m expected to have a flawless complexion.

To ensure that my skin always looks its best (even after a night of lousy sleep) and to delay or hopefully avoid cosmetic surgery, I can’t waste my time with products that are anything less than stellar. That’s why  I use a daily skincare regimen loaded with peptides to smooth existing fine lines and prevent new ones from forming. Every night before I apply my skincare, I use a micro-channeler system to maximize the effects of those peptides and other beneficial ingredients I’m putting on my face. The micro-channeler creates small channels in my skin’s outermost layer, allowing products to penetrate deeper, giving me better overall results. In the morning I use my top secret anti-aging cream, which contains sunscreen, of course and is loaded with lots of other goodies, and I’m out the door.  There are also occasional botox touch-ups … I’m not opposed to a little extra help here and there. But my daily routine keeps my skin looking its best today, tomorrow and the years to come.

While l I’m open to changing my mind in the years to come, for now I’m sticking to my guns. So as time takes its toll, I’m continuing to roll … and that’s how I do it!

Searching for the Cream of Week

As your skin ages, there are several things happening under the surface:

  • Cell turnover decreases
  • Collagen and elastin fibers decrease in content and weaken
  • The moisture barrier becomes compromised, causing dry skin

Given the complexity of the aging processes listed above, there is no silver bullet that will stave off Father Time. To effectively combat skin aging, you need a comprehensive regimen clinically proven to address each of these major causes.

hairman of Rodan + Fields

I use a lot of different Rodan + Fields’ products, but my new favorite is the brand new ANTI-AGE Multi-Function Eye Cream. You may be surprised to hear me say this … it’s not every day that a man admits to being so invested in his skin that he applies eye cream daily. But I know from my wife that the eyes are the first part of your face to reveal the signs of aging, and I want to look my best as much as you do.

When it comes to defying the aging effects of time, nothing gets me to where I want to be better than the new eye cream. The formulation is stellar, it feels great going on, smells good too, and the best part … it really works. In fact, it works so well that you may not even recognize me at convention this September in New Orleans.

Collagen-stimulating peptides

Collagen-stimulating peptides (like Palmitoyl Hexapeptide-14, Acetyl Hexapeptide-3, Myristoyl Tetrapeptide-8, Myristoyl Pentapeptide-8, and Palmitoyl Oligopeptide) are small chains of amino acids that signal the skin to make more collagen. The end result is firmer, smoother, less- lined skin.

Find collagen-stimulating peptides in Rodan + Fields® ANTI-AGE Skin Protectant Cream SPF 15 Sunscreen, ANTI-AGE Night Renewing Serum, ANTI-AGE Night Recovery Cream, ANTI-AGE Multi-Function Eye Cream, and ANTI-AGE Eye Cloths.
